Episode #4 The Locker Room, Florissant, MO 09/02/2010

Today’s episode was filmed at The Locker Room in Florissant Missouri.  The Locker Room is a well established sports bar in North County.  It came highly recommended by a couple of our friends.  These friends had just been married the week before and we were celebrating their new life together.  What better way to celebrate then eating chicken wings.  A side bar, is that our friend is active duty Navy and some nice people in the bar sent over a appreciation beer.  This says volumes about the type of people we encountered in this place.  Everyone was so friendly.  We went on a Thursday night and they had an incredible wing special.  Five dollars for the biggest bowl of wings I have ever had!  Not only did we get a boat load of wings, the wings themselves were big.  All of them were big!  Great sized wings at a great price.  The flavors that we enjoyed were the regular hot wings and the Hurt Me wings.  They were lightly breaded and had a buttery, Hooters like taste.  They were tasty and had a good flavor but truly did not live up to the “Hurt Me” name.  Truth be told, they were not hot at all.  These were good wings at a great value, but their sauce was not that unique.  Some people in our party had the “Chicken Feathers”.  They loved them.  They were pieces of white chicken meat tossed in the sauce.  They really were incredible.  The service was outstanding.  Our waitress was Jackie.  She did a great job making sure that our bucket of beer was never empty and kept the food coming at a great clip.  The sports bar also has a great ambience.  This is a awesome place to watch sporting events.  The day we were there the Cardinals and the Rams were playing at the same time.  The establishment is a little dark inside so the video quality is not as great as it usually is, but you will clearly get a feel for the place in this episode.

QUALITY OF THE WINGS

5 out of 5    All the wings were the same size.  They were big and meaty.

UNIQUENESS OF THE FLAVOR

3 out of 5    The wings were good, but they were not extraordinary, they were more ordinary.  The “Hurt Me” wings did not live up to their name.

VALUE

5 out of 5     Five dollars for a big honking bowl of chicken wings!  Can’t be beat!

SERVICE

5 out of 5    Service was exceptional.  Jackie was terrific.

AMBIENCE

5 out of 5    This is a great sports bar, complete with wonderful people, lots of TV’s, cheap beer, and great food.

This special episode of Chicken Wing TV.Com was filmed at the third annual chicken wing festival at Joy Community Church.  (You can learn more about Joy at www.joycommunity.com)  Once a year the men get together and have a wing festival.  Every guest brings two dozen wings and a beverage to share.  The wings are either store bought, restaurant bought or home made.  Each guest then votes for the best tasting wing and the hottest wing.  The third prize category is “Dave’s Choice”.   This year many of the men made their own wings.  Kyle Heywood came into the night the reigning champion.  Last year his “Polynesian Heat” wings took first prize.  He outdid himself again this year with the Cherry Blossom Wings.  His presentation was incredible and the wings were truly unique.  The guys loved them and they easily took first place.  Any wing joint would be wise to put Kyle on staff and sell these morsels.  The hottest wings were brought by retired Navy, Dwayne Barber.  He made these wings out of pequin peppers which are among the hottest on the Scaville scale.  (More about this scale in a later post).   These wings were hotter than hell.  Dave’s choice was a wing called, “Peanut Butter and Jelly Wings”.  Chad Humphries was the creator of these wings.  True to their name, they were made with peanut butter and jelly.  They were an extremely unique wing and you could really taste the peanut butter.  The local wing festival is a great event for organizations to host for fundraisers or just for fun.  Please know that if you or your organization plan on doing a Wing Ding Festival, Anthony and I will travel to your event to be the judges.  There is no fee for this service and all that we ask is that you pay our travel expenses.

Episode #3 Massa's Italian Restaurant 08/13/2010

I know that the day is going to come when our camera crew is going to roll into a restaurant to do a review and the wings are going to suck.  But it has not happened yet.  Our third episode of Chicken Wing TV.Com was filmed at Massa’s Italian Restaurant in O’Fallon Missouri.  Massa’s is a well known and favorite Italian restaurant among the locals.  But they are not known for their wings.  Until now, these chicken wing morsels have been off the chicken wing radar.  Listen Chicken Wing Lovers, when you visit St. Louis you have got to visit Massa’s and order the Buffalo wings with parmesan cheese.  They were incredible.  Great flavor, great sauce, big meaty wings, served with freshly ground parmesan cheese.  Check out the video where I roll the wing in this cheese.  For you chicken wing purist the wings are great even without the cheese.  The wings were great.  They were clearly some of the best that I have ever had in St. Louis.  I met with one of the owners who shared that their family’s philosophy is to serve and be the best of everything on the menu.  He said if it made its way on the menu, it is good.   I agree.  They have two kinds of wings, Buffalo & BBQ.   Not a huge selection but the Buffalo wings were mild enough that even people with a sensitive palate will enjoy them.  We had two servings of the Buffalo wings.  Our servers were Heather and Stephanie.  They were attentive, engaging and fun.  We sat outside on the patio so sometimes our beers reached the bottom.  (Not good)  We managed to survive and the service really was fine.  Massa’s has live music on Thursday nights, a great patio overlooking a beautiful pond, and a great vibe.  Massa’s has several other locations in the St. Louis area.  I look forward to dining more frequently at this establishment.

Episode # 2 Broadway Oyster Bar in St. Louis Missouri 08/03/2010

Our second episode of Chicken Wing TV.Com was filmed in downtown St. Louis just a block from Busch Stadium.  The restaurant is called The Broadway Oyster Bar.  The Broadway Oyster Bar is famous for its New Orleans like feel.  This is a restaurant that we frequently visit before Cardinals game.  Parking behind the building is only $10.00 and the pregame hospitality is unrivaled in St. Louis.  This particular visit was the first time that I ever ordered the wings.  They are called VOODO Wings.  They only have one flavor and we ordered a second order that tasted exactly like the first.  They were super.  A very unique Cajun like flavor, that I can honestly say I have never tasted before.  They were adequately covered in the sauce and our entire party was pleasantly surprised that a restaurant that features Cajun food had such great wings.  Our server was Katherine and she did a great job at taking care of our table.  She was quick to bring drink refills and was attentive to the table.  One of the challenges with going before a Cardinals game is that all the guests get up and leave at the same time.  Our bill was a little slow coming and I was afraid we were going to miss the first pitch.   Clearly not our servers fault.  In terms of the wings, they were so good that we ordered a second helping.  One of the growing edges for these wings was that they were all different shapes.  Some of the wings were big and meaty and others were small and feeble.    The ambience of this restaurant is incredible.  We sat on the outside patio.  There was a festive pregame feel to the establishment with everyone having a great time.  They have an outdoor stage for entertainment but also have seating inside for people who prefer to dine indoors.  Clearly a party vibe that makes wing eating all the better!  Before all Cardinal games all guests are given a red ticket.  Thirty minutes before the game starts the owner of the establishment gives two free Cardinal tickets away to the next home game.  They also give each one of the guest a free ice cold bottle of water as they are leaving.  (Off the chart hospitality)  Broadway Oyster Bar won’t be in the top 10 wing joints in the US but if you are visiting St. Louis, they are super wings and you will not be disappointed with the Wing Eating Experience.

Episode # 1 Buffalo's Reef in Fort Walton Florida 07/19/2010

Our first episode of Chicken Wing TV.Com was filmed in Fort Walton Beach at a restaurant called Buffalo’s Reef.  This is a restaurant that I have been visiting every year for the past five years.  The consistency and the quality of the wings cause this restaurant to be ranked in the top 10 best wing places in the United States.  Every time we visit we leaved pleased.  We visited on two separate occasions this past trip.  Our servers were Ashley and Kristina and they did a great job taking care of us.  They were quick with drink refills and were very attentive and engaging.  We conducted the review on a Friday night.  We arrived at Buffalo’s Reef at 8:00pm and we had a good fifteen minute wait to be seated.  (Always a good sign) I talked to a local who was celebrating his 50th birthday with his family.  He told me there is no place he would rather be then Buffalo’s Reef.  Buffalo’s Reef seems to be in a building that was a fast food restaurant at one time.  It is more of a family establishment then a bar.  They have booths and tables.  We ordered the Super Hot wings and the Hot wings.  Earlier in the week we ordered the Honey BBQ and the Honey Mustard.  They were all delicious.  The wings consistently taste the same at Buffalo’s Reef.  They clearly order from the same company and prepare the wings the same way every time.   The Super Hot wings are among the tastiest and hottest wings I have ever eaten in my life.  Check out the video’s to see what they look like.  They are also great “cold” the next morning.  The restaurant also has sandwiches, wraps and salads.

QUALITY OF THE WINGS

5 out of 5   They are big, meaty and tasty

UNIQUENESS OF THE FLAVOR

5 out of 5   The Super Hot is unlike any other Chicken Wing I’ve tasted

VALUE

5 out of 5   Prices were reasonable and I felt that I got my money’s worth

SERVICE

5 out of 5   Servers are very professional and appear to be well trained

AMBIENCE

3 out of 5   The restaurant is an old Pizza Hut or something…nothing great
